WhatsApp users started falling prey to fraud in the name of mother

WhatsApp users around the world are falling prey to a new fraud in which elderly parents, especially mothers, are being scammed in the name of children.

WhatsApp is one of the most popular apps in the world, WhatsApp has more than 2 billion users worldwide.

This platform offers users to connect with their family and friends, send money and many other facilities but nowadays there are also reports of frauds among the unsuspecting users of the app.

Only in Australia, people have lost 7.2 million US dollars, which is worth more than 1 billion 62 million in Pakistani currency, due to the fraud done through WhatsApp.

Always start their messages with 'hi mum' on WhatsApp, hence it is called 'hi mum' fraud.

According to the Australian Consumer and Competition Commission (ACCC), which investigates fraud cases in Australia, the number of victims of WhatsApp fraud has increased 10 times in the last 3 months.

How is the victim trapped in 'Hi Mum'?

The scam starts with the victim sending a message on WhatsApp to a family member or friend claiming to have lost or damaged their phone. Once they gain the victim's trust, they will say they need help, which in most cases is financial. Then the victim sends them money thinking they are helping their son or daughter. But in reality they are being cheated.
