Joe Biden: The US President promises to engage the United States "with all its energy" in Africa's future

US President Joe Biden announced the allocation of billions of dollars to support and invest in Africa at a summit with the heads of state of the continent.

"The United States is interested in the future of Africa," President Biden told the 49 African leaders attending the summit in Washington, D.C.

This is the first such gathering hosted by Washington in eight years.

The summit is seen as a US attempt to reassert its influence in Africa to counter the Chinese presence.

It also comes after the four-year term of Donald Trump, during which he distanced himself from many African leaders with some of his policy decisions and disparaging comments.
