Does Upwork charge a fee?

Yes, Upwork does charge fees for its services. For freelancers, Upwork charges a service fee that is deducted from the amount the freelancer earns on a project. The service fee is a percentage of the total project cost and is calculated as follows:

For the first $500 earned with a client, the service fee is 20%.

For total earnings with a client between $500.01 and $10,000, the service fee is 10%.

For total earnings with a client that exceed $10,000, the service fee is 5%.

For clients, Upwork charges a processing fee for each payment made through the platform. The processing fee is a percentage of the total payment amount and is calculated as follows:

For payments made using a credit card, the processing fee is 2.9% + $0.30.

For payments made using a debit card, the processing fee is 3.5% + $0.30.

For payments made using a bank account, the processing fee is 1% for domestic payments and 1.5% for international payments.

In addition to the above fees, Upwork also charges a "Connect" fee of $0.15 per Connect when a freelancer uses Connects to apply for jobs. Connects are a currency on Upwork that freelancers can use to apply for jobs, send proposals, and purchase additional features on the platform.
