According to the Associated France Press (AFP), Tunisian Mohamed Lahwej Bouhlal rammed a truck into people participating in the annual Bastille Day celebrations on the beach in Nice, France, on July 14, for several minutes. 86 people were killed and more than 450 were injured in the ongoing operation, the police shot and killed the attacker while taking action.
According to the French news agency, the French court sentenced 8 suspects for assisting the suspect and other charges in the incident, 2 of these suspects, 47-year-old Muhammad Gharib and 43-year-old Shukri Shafarud, were convicted of helping the main suspect, Muhammad Lahawij Bu Hilal. But 18 years of imprisonment has been given.
During the court proceedings, both the persons denied the other allegations including assisting the accused.
Ramzi Arefa, 28, was sentenced to 12 years after admitting supplying the gun to Bou Hilal, although he was not accused of criminal association with terrorists and had no knowledge of Bou Hilal's ability to carry out an attack.
After the incident, Daesh claimed that Bo Hilal was among its followers, but no concrete evidence was found.
According to the report, five other suspects, including one Tunisian and four Albanians, have been sentenced to 2 to 8 years in prison for arms trafficking or criminal conspiracy.
According to French and Tunisian media reports, Bouhlal's body was brought back to Tunisia in 2017 and buried in his hometown of Maskin in the south of Tunisia.
